Adults and youngsters alike will want to make sure they catch the multi-award winning local theatre production Egoli – The Musical at a theatre near them as the show tours to venues and various schools across Cape Town.
The show heads to the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg from Monday September 12 to Saturday September 17.
Following its sell-out performances at the Zabalaza Theatre Festival last year, which saw it invited for a subsequent run at the Baxter Theatre, Egoli – The Musical is back with its talented cast of performers to tell the story of Madlamini and her colourful journey to the City of Gold.
Written, composed and directed by rising star Bongani Titana, Egoli – The Musical pays homage to the resilient spirit of a woman, as the central character Madlamini has to leave her home and rural village to search for her beloved husband in Egoli, the big city of Johannesburg, where he has gone to make his fortune – and gone AWOL in the process. The cast of nine actors, including the awardwinning Zikhona Jacobs and Ayanda Dukuse, bring to life a host of vibrant and eclectic characters that Madlamini meets on her trip. Further flavour is added through the use of Xhosa for much of the dialogue, with English narration, and the show is both completely understandable and immensely enjoyable for audience members that speak either or both languages. In classic musical style, the family friendly story is told through vivid physical acting and original songs that showcase the rhythms and musical harmony of African culture.
Egoli – the Musical received standing ovations and a phenomenal four awards at the Zabalaza Theatre Festival 2015 including Best of the Festival, Best Musical Director, Most Outstanding Artist and the Outright-Faisit Award for Performance Excellence, and went on to be selected for the official program me at the 2015 Cape Town Fringe festival.
