Fallen Angels, by Noel Coward, opens at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg, on Friday May 20. This 1925 champagne-bubbly, witty romp is full of the sharp dialogue and satirical insights into the British upper class that Coward is renowned for.
The play centres on two bored, upper-class British housewives, Julia Sterroll and her best friend, Jane Banbury. The pair are both left pining for the long lost passion of their youth, as both their husbands prefer golf to romance. Their lives are suddenly about to be turned upside down by the imminent return of Maurice Duclos – their shared, French ex-lover. The pair alternate between ecstasy and terror in case he should appear and expose their former lustful indiscretions.
Fallen Angels is presented by Muizenberg Amateur Dramatic Society (MADS) and directed by Barbara Basel. This is her fifth production for the society that last year brought us Gas Light and Whodunnit. Leading the talented cast is CATA nominee, Jana Botha and newcomer to the Masque, Tamika Sewnarain as the bored best friends. Botha was last seen in The Actor’s Nightmare and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, for which she received a CATA nomination for her portrayal of Puck.
The cast is rounded out by other Masque regulars Gary Green (recent FHDS award winner), Eve Carr and Alastair Duff. The final member of the cast is Mark Wilkes who won the CATA for Best Newcomer for his role in Milnerton’s 2015 production of Noises Off.
This production promises to be visually satisfying thanks to the talents of other well-known Masque faces. Margi Blewett has designed an “art-deco” set to complement Alastair Duff’s costumes, which reflect the glamour of post-World War I. John Blewett will once again create his usual magic with lights and sound.
Fallen Angels opens at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg, on Friday May 20 and runs until Saturday May 28 – excluding Sunday to Tuesday. Opening night is a gala performance for Safer Together, and normal performances will start with the matinee on Saturday May 21.
