South African and Italian recipients of the Jazz Without Borders bursary will be playing at the Masque Theatre Foyer Sessions on Sunday September 18, at 6.30pm.
In 2011, the South African Association for Jazz Education (SAJE) started a cultural exchange programme with the Arcevia Feast in Italy. The bursary allows two Italian jazz musicians to spend two weeks in Cape Town studying at UCT, with some performances and travel, and for two UCT jazz students to spend two weeks in Italy attending the Arcevia Jazz Feast in July each year, along with some performances and travel. This exchange project is facilitated by Professor Mike Rossi who is head of woodwinds in the jazz studies department at the SA College of Music at UCT.
The performers at Foyer Sessions are all recipients of this bursary. The Italians are Marco Varvello (piano/piano accordion/electric bass), an established composer/musician in Italy performing in a number of different jazz and world music settings; and Andrea Elisei (drums) who will complete his jazz studies degree this year at the Conservatory of Music in Adria, Italy, and has won numerous awards.
The locals are Evan Froud (alto saxophone), currently a third year student at UCT who performs regularly with his own trio as well as other bands in Cape Town and Sibusiso Matsimela (acoustic bass), currently in his final year at UCT, who performs regularly in and around Cape Town and is in great demand as a bassist.
Special guest will be Professor Rossi (saxophones/ flute/clarinet). Tickets are R100. Contact 021 788 1898 or bookings@masquetheatre.co.za to book.
