Author Mark Hardie began writing full time after losing his sight completely in 2002.
His first crime novel, Burned and Broken, was published in 2016 and introduced DS Frank Pearson and DC Catherine Russell of the Essex Police Major Investigation Team.
In his second novel, Truly Evil, a body has been found dumped on the shores of Southend and Pearson and Russell are tasked with solving the case quickly, and quietly.
When the victim’s identity is revealed, the list of suspects begins to grow: a young woman knows more than she’s letting on, but is she really involved? Or is the estranged father, who’s been trying to find the victim for months.
Then a shocking tragedy leads Pearson to a similar murder case from decades before and the two detectives find themselves drawn into a terrifying cover-up going back 50 years
While I have no major criticism of this book I do feel it could have been more than it turned out to be.
I sometimes felt there is too much going on and that several of the story threads were left unclear.
