With just more than a week to go before Mitchell’s Plain’s biggest annual festival, tickets are selling fast.
The highly-anticipated 2023 DStv Kyknet Mitchell’s Plain Festival, in association with the Plainsman, is back from Friday December 1 to Sunday December 3, at the Westridge Gardens, and it promises to be a spectacular celebration of culture and talent.
This year, the festival commemorates its 15th anniversary, and festival director, Rozario Brown, says it will be bigger and better than ever and festival-goers can mark their calendars for a weekend of non-stop family entertainment.
The festival will feature more than 60 local artists, entertainers, bands, DJs, and dance groups on two stages over the three festival days.
Renowned artists like Vicky Sampson, Karin Kortje, Madeega Anders, Vuvu Kumalo, Street Kings Dance Crew, the Temple Boys, Fagrie Isaacs, the Mitchell’s Plain Music Academy and many more will grace these stages.
DStv and Kyknet will showcase their popular personalities while Heart FM will broadcast live from the event, featuring some of its most beloved on-air presenters. Funland Amusement will return with thrilling carnival rides for all ages, offering exciting prizes and surprises.
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will once again put up an impressive display to recruit young people and raise awareness of various job opportunities.
Mr Brown says key objectives of the event are diverse and impactful: celebrating the rich and cultural heritage of the Cape Flats, creating at least one thousand part-time jobs to boost local employment, providing a platform for local entrepreneurs and SMMEs to showcase their products and services to the broader community, while “paying homage to our unsung heroes and acknowledging our living heroes.”
He says in terms of economic development, over one hundred local entrepreneurs and SMMEs will use the festival to present and promote their goods and services to an expected audience of more than 30 000 festival-goers over the three festival days.
The festival remains a popular outlet for local businesses to showcase their products and introduce new offerings to the broader community at reasonable rates. The festival is a lifeline to more than a thousand annual workers, including cleaners, musicians, dancers, DJs, car guards, neighbourhood watch members, stall workers, production crews, security staff, paramedics, ticketing staff, marketing personnel, and critical infrastructure providers.
Operating hours for the festival are: Friday, from 4pm to 11pm; Saturday, from 11am to 11pm and Sunday, from 11am to 6pm.
No person under the age of 13 will be allowed access to the festival without adult supervision, no illegal substances or alcohol will be tolerated at the event, no persons under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be allowed on the premises and children under the age of 6 must be tagged upon entry by dedicated staff.
There will be limited off-street parking in Morgenster Drive; there will be no parking outside the festival gates while additional parking will be available at Westgate Mall. Loop Transport will be available to safely drop festival attendees after the event – follow Loop Transport on social media for updates.
Tickets are available from Computicket, Shoprite and Checkers. Ticket prices are R50 for persons aged 6 to 12 years old and pensioners, tickets are R70 for persons aged 13 and over and children under the age of 6 and physically disabled persons enter for free. Note that tickets cost R20 more when purchased at the gates.
