Silly Cow, written by Ben Elton, opens at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg, on Friday October 21. This slick satire is full of sharp, witty dialogue and shows off just why Elton is one of Britain’s funniest writers.
One of only four stage plays written by Elton, this script is a modern satire that is at times vulgar but funny and clever from start to finish.
The story revolves around Doris, a rather nasty, over-the-top journalist who writes for a London newspaper. She has become infamous for slinging savage insults and assassinating actors’ careers with her sharp wit.
As the action starts, Doris is getting ready to head off to court where she is being sued by an actress who received a particularly vicious review from the self-proclaimed “ratbag of the ratings”.
Despite the court case, everything is going well for Doris. She’s got a great new job offer, a plan for a television show and plenty of people in her life to push around. However, pride always comes before a fall. Audiences will delight in how Doris gets everything that’s coming to her.
Silly Cow marks the directorial debut of Faeron Wheeler. As an actress, Wheeler has been seen on the Masque stage numerous times.
The cast is led by Kim R2 as the celebrity columnist and Santie Du Toit as Peggy, the mousy assistant. The cast is completed by Trad Nogueira-Godsey, Matt Roy and, newcomer to the Masque, Justin Wyatt-Smith.
Silly Cow is presented by Claremont Dramatic Society. It runs until Saturday October 29 – excluding Sunday to Tuesday.
