The False Bay Folk Club meets again on Tuesday March 1 at the Clovelly Country Club, from 6.30pm, with guest artists André de Villiers, Matthew Rice and Devin Harmer.
André de Villiers’ music career started when he began strumming a hand-me-down guitar in his early teens. He joined his first band at 15 and started singing at dance halls in Cape Town, leaving school early at 17 to front one of SA’s pioneering rock groups, Hammak. Success came like an avalanche – it was surprisingly fast and excitingly furious. Soon they were heading for (fame and fortune) overseas.
André’s mellow voice, inspired by his faith, drives his desire to share the songs he has written in the valleys and mountain tops of his life. Last year his travels took him on one-man concert tours to the United States, Australia, Singapore, Holland and the United Kingdom, interpsersed by performances in maximum security prisons and high schools.
With 15 record albums to his credit, besides award-winning ad jingles, Andre is one of the few survivors of the sex, drugs, rock ’* ’ roll era left standing.
Matthew Rice is a singer, songwriter, musician, poet, loop artist, inventor, guitar maker and player. His songs have been featured on several documentaries and TV programmes. He has collaborated on stage and in the studio with some of South Africa’s finest and shared the stage with more such as Freshlyground, Tony Cox, Steve Newman and Syd Kitchen. Among the instruments he uses on stage are his own Casimi handmade acoustic guitars. His new EP features four tracks that are firmly rooted in the worlds of folk and rock.
Singer-songwriter Devin Harmer makes acoustic “folk(ish)” music. He loves playing his songs, but he probably loves writing them more. After leaving Jo’burg he began performing as a solo artist under the alias of Ends and the Ocean, but that proved to be too much of a tongue-twister, so he started doing shows under his own name. He has played all over Cape Town and at a few spots in Jo’burg as well as at a bunch of local festivals.
The cover charge is R50. Light meals are available but must be ordered by 7pm. Bookings on 021 782 2920.
