Clovelly Country Club played host last week to a celebration of what would have been the 101st birthday of legendary golfer, and former Fish Hoek resident, Arthur D’Arcy “Bobby” Locke.
Locke, who owned Bobby Locke Motors on the Main Road, won four Open Championships, nine South African Opens, seven South African PGA Championships and 15 PGA Tour events.
The evening was part of the Fish Hoek centenary celebrations, and the Rotary Club Cape of Good Hope, Fish Hoek Historical Association and Fish Hoek 100 and Beyond honoured not just Locke but other sporting greats from the valley.
There were more than 120 people at the event, including sporting veterans, their partners, friends and supporters.
Many of them proudly wore their Springbok or Proteas blazers and ties while they shared stories of days gone by.
Rotary Club Cape of Good Hope secretary Bev Frieslich said it seemed an ideal opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the sports men and women from the valley over the past 100 years, those who had attained national
or provincial colours, or had achieved remarkable results in their chosen sport or by acting as a coach.
While some had died, their names appeared on a roll of honour at the Fish Hoek Valley Museum, she said.
