Etienne de la Harpe, Noordhoek
Patterson’s Curse, Australian category 1b alien weed has destroyed 33 million hectares of indigenous bush in Australia, and is currently entrenched in the Noordhoek Wetlands, and in established patches in Noordhoek itself and as far as Peer’s Hill Road and False Bay Hospital in Sun Valley.
I suspect it has crossed Peer’s Hill Road into the fynbos by now. If not pulled, it spreads in huge swathes each year, grows shoulder to shoulder and poisons the land beneath it with a deadly alkaloid poison, killing the vegetation beneath it and preventing any further growth by any plant except itself.
So the Noordhoek Wetlands, for instance, would turn into toxic desert in a question of a few years. So far no reaction from council or anyone else.
