While the Ocean View community is still in shock after the killings of two youths last week, (“Casualties of war”, Echo, September 14) this weekend claimed another two lives, one on Saturday evening, September 16 and the other in the early hours of Sunday morning September 17.
Janico Lakay, 16 was repeatedly stabbed on Saturday night. He was rushed to the False Bay Hospital but died due to his injuries.
Ocean View police spokesman, Sergeant Leon Fortuin said a 19-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the stabbing and had been charged with murder. He appeared
in the Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday September 18.
In the second incident, a 29-year-old man, Romano Brooks, was shot and killed in Lyra Avenue.
Sergeant Fortuin said no arrests had been made and urged anyone with infor-
mation to call the Ocean View police station on 021 783 8300 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
He added that SAPS would like to make an appeal to the community to respect crime scenes.
“Many members of the community stand around the scene and want to get close to the victim, not realising that they are disturbing the crime scene and in some cases leave traces of DNA at the crime scenes,” he said.
He said this hampered the investigation when DNA tests were done.
He would also like to appeal to residents to not use foul and abusive language at crime scenes while family members of the deceased are present and grieving.
“That is very disrespectful towards the family,” he said.
