Police arrested a 16-year-boy with a loaded gun as well as a 24-year-old man, who was also armed, in gang-war-ravaged Ocean View, on Monday night.
Ocean View police spokesman, Sergeant Leon Fortuin, said officers patrolling the flats around Milky Way – an area known as”The Blokke” – spotted a group of suspicious males standing next to the wall of one of the flats.
They searched them and found a gun – loaded with nine rounds and with its serial number filed off – on the 24-year-old. There were two rounds in the gun found on the 16-year-old.
Gang violence in the area has claimed the lives of several young men in the past two months.
Two were shot metres apart at The Blokke (“Mothers bury their sons,” Echo, July 12).
Sergeant Fortuin said the suspects were charged with possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition and appeared in the Simon’ s Town Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Wednesday August 1.
“There are way too many firearms in the area. Evidence of this is the constant shootings occurring and the amount of firearms the police are recovering,” he said.
“We have taken more firearms off the streets, which may have been used to kill more people in the community.”
He urged the community to come forward with information and call Ocean View police at 021 783 8300 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
