Rugby fans clubbed together for the community of Ocean View on Mandela Day.
The Atlas Foundation at Ocean View High School – in collaboration with Masiphumelele High School and the Old School Group – co-ordinated a small team of helpers to clear the back field at Ocean View High School.
The aim was to clean the field so that it could be used for coaching practices. The field was unplayable before this.
The Atlas Foundation was founded in 2014 by Jason Leonard (former English prop and most capped English rugby player) and together with a global network of rugby champions, they support grassroots rugby projects which improve lives in some of the poorest places on earth.
According to Sue Anderson, manager of the South African part of The Atlas Foundation, it reaches more than 37 000 children in 20 projects in 15 countries.
“To ensure that our money reaches the right destination and children benefit, we work through a global Rugby Champions network, making sure that our projects are solid, and that our money is spent properly,” Ms Anderson said.
The foundation’s Rugby Champions are mostly international rugby legends, including the winners of the Rugby World Cup, and Centurions, with more than 100 international matches.
The Atlas Foundation works with other organisations in these schools and is responsible for implementing the Atlas All Schools Programme, which focuses on the power of team play, respect, discipline and important life values through rugby coaching.
