Buffel the southern elephant seal and Fish Hoek’s most loved visitor is back but this time not in Fish Hoek. He was spotted and photographed by Charles Dagnall at Buffels Bay in Cape Point Nature Reserve. He has come for his seasonal moult and is a little larger, a little fatter but still his endearing self with his liquid eyes and habit of tossing sand over himself to keep himself cool. Buffel made his appearance on Fish Hoek Beach last year in January. It’s believed Buffel came from Marion Island some 2 100km away. During moulting, seals don’t eat and the process can take up to a month.
