Simon’s Town Museum is collecting handbags and basic necessities to make care packages for rape survivors.
Tazneem Wentzel, the museum’s education officer, said the handbags and the items to fill them would be given to Rape Crisis so the organisation could make up the care packages to be given to rape survivors at police stations.
“We feel very strongly about the issue of rape and would appreciate any donations of unused or good second-hand handbags that we can donate towards the project,” she said.
The museum is appealing for various items, as suggested by Rape Crisis, to fill the bags: female and male underwear (from child to adult sizes); soap or body wash; facecloths; toothbrushes and toothpaste; small non-perishable snacks; and sanitary towels (not tampons).
As optional extras, you can donate: deodorant; shampoo; small notebooks and pens; smalls toys for children; hair bands, combs and hairbrushes; and notes with words of comfort.
The bags can be dropped off at the museum’s reception by Friday August 30 with a note giving your name, phone number and the number of items donated.
“We will deliver the bags to Rape Crisis personally,” Ms Wentzel said.
