Breadline Africa is preparing for its 24th annual beach day, a highlight for children from underprivileged communities.
This year’s event, which runs from Tuesday November 26 to Thursday November 29, will be held at St James Beach.
Previous events have been hosted at various locations, including Silverstream Beach in Atlantis, Strand Beach, Fish Hoek Beach, Muizenberg Beach, and Strandfontein Beach.
Breadline Africa is a non-profit organisation in Muizenberg focused on improving early childhood education in South Africa.
They build classrooms, kitchens, and toilet facilities in schools using converted shipping containers. The organisation also supports preschool meals, community kitchens and food parcels to ensure children have the nutrition needed to learn and thrive.
Breadline Africa donor care manager Selina Kleinsmith said the event continued to grow each year with increasing participation and support from the community.
“We’ve been hosting the seaside event since 2000, and it’s always such a rewarding occasion. This year, we’re expecting over 200 children, aged 3 to 6, from areas such as Khayelitsha, Langa, Gugulethu, and many others.
“The goal is to give these children the opportunity to experience the beach, enjoy some fun activities, and feel safe. It’s a chance to give back to the communities that support us throughout the year.”
This year, Breadline Africa has partnered with Shark Spotters for the second time.
“Shark Spotters’ involvement helps ensure the event is not only fun but safe,” Ms Kleinsmith said. “They teach the children about staying safe on the beach, understanding the ocean, and how to spot danger.”
The public’s support was key to the success of the event, Ms Kleinsmith said, appealing for donations of hats, beach toys, sunscreen, beach towels, and snacks.
“These donations help make the day even more special for the kids,” she said. “In the past, the community has been incredibly generous, and we’re hoping for the same this year.”
Phelisa Stemela, who attended the event as a child, recalled her experience fondly.
“I will never forget the fun I had at the beach. It was an opportunity to experience something different and exciting, and it made me feel special,” she said.
