Shona Allie, of Shona Allie Prison Ministries, brought cheer to Bronze Street in Rocklands, Mitchell’s Plain, where she lives, when she hosted her annual party for her neighbours’ children on Wednesday December 14.
Ms Allie has been visiting prisoners here and overseas for the past 27 years to deliver messages from friends and family.
Dressed as Mother Christmas, she distributed party packs, toys and sweet treats to the children.
At her side were Pinky Coetzee, from Fish Hoek, her daughter, Vanessa and granddaughter Kira Coetzee, 10, who distributed blankets.
Ms Coetzee met Ms Allie at a church function where she was introduced to Prison Ministries.
Kira had been involved in a food distribution project with the people living on the streets, when she noticed they needed blankets.
She wrote to Ms Coetzee’s sister in Holland about her plan to distribute blankets earlier this year and since then they’ve collect
R20 000 and made 700 blankets.
Kira has also reached out to the Seventh Day Adventist church, who have in turn spread the word.
They get the fabric at half price, cut it and hand it out to the underprivileged.
Ms Coetzee said they are very appreciative of donations.
