The Friends of Silvermine Nature Area (Fosna) has received a R50 000 boost for its conservation efforts from mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis’s discretionary fund.
This comes after Mr Hill-Lewis attended Fosna’s Source to Sea walk in May to raise money for the preservation of the Silvermine River and surrounds.
“Participation by the mayor has raised the profile of the group and is part of a process of building a relationship between Fosna and the City,” said Fosna chairman Dave Balfour.
Mr Hill-Lewis said: “Fosna does exceptional work to protect and promote a very special part of our natural heritage. I was glad to be able to support their work via the fund, from which the mayoral committee is able to make a few discretionary allocations each year.”
Mr Balfour said Fosna had struggled to pay the salaries and uniform costs of the two staff members it employs, and the donation would have a significant impact on Fosna’s ability to sustain its conservation work.
“We can now not just cover their expenses but also provide them with new uniforms. These uniforms feature long trousers, button-up shirts, fleece tops, rain gear, and peak caps – all of which are a much-welcomed addition to their wardrobes this winter.”
