A total of R500 000 was raised for the victims of the fire at Hout Bay’s Imizamo Yethu, R220 000 donated by the Cycle Tour.
Charities in Fish Hoek were using the Cycle Tour to raise funds for the people of Masi, yet the right of 35 000 cyclists to cycle the entire route was disrupted by 500 protesters.
Everyone in Ocean View and Masi knew about the planned protest the day before, we can thus assume the police knew about it as well.
The wind was a huge factor in the cancellation of the event, however, no doubt the inability of the police to provide safe passage for the participants weighed heavily on the final decision. It’s just not acceptable.
