Johannes C van der Walt, Simon’s Town
Dirk van Niekerk, a long time resident of Simon’s Town, celebrated his 88 birthday in December last year.
Dirk has had a remarkable, successful career and personal life. He studied electrical engineering at the University of Stellenbosch and then did his post-graduate research at the University of Manchester in England. He established an engineering firm in Johannesburg.
He was mainly responsible for the provision of electricity to the Witwatersrand townships. He can rightly claim to be the “father” of the electrical system in especially the Johannesburg and Soweto suburbs.
One of his passions in life is to walk the mountain trails in the Cape. He is a long standing member of the Simon’s Town Thursday Walking Group. He regularly walks seven to eight kilometres every Thursday. His motto is: “Never give up and complete the journey.”
Dirk is still enjoying good health. This is
the result of his firm belief that red wine keeps the bad cholesterol away and a whiskey, now and then, sustains an orderly heartbeat.
We wish him and his family good health and many years of walking.
