False Bay Folk Club are back to their regular monthly meeting date on the first Tuesday of the month, and this concert at Clovelly Country Club on Tuesday October 4 features the three-part harmony of Hatchetman and the intimacy of John Shaban’s solo guitar.
Prodigous musical and vocal talents have formed Hatchetman, a band that, as the name suggests, cuts straight to the heart with songs on life, love, and most things in between. Musically the band meets somewhere between folk, rock, funk and acoustically inclined sounds, all delicately underpinned by the powerful yet delicate blend of three voices.
In contrast, Jon Shaban will be singing solo.
Having gigged extensively locally and internationally as part of various bands, Jon has decided to try something slightly scarier – a solo career.
Armed with just his voice and his guitar, he takes to the stage to deliver songs which have been described as honest and easy to relate to.
The performance is raw and there’s no holding back on the sharing of extremely personal experiences, the kind we’ve all been through but haven’t necessarily processed in the way Jon does.
“It’s exhausting sharing my life with a room full of total strangers,” says Jon. “But it’s the feeling of walking off stage after such an intimate creative release and feeling like a new person which makes it worth it.” As well as his solo performance, Jon is also part of The Shabeen, a band he put together to back the songs he has written.
The band consists of Jon on guitar and vocals, Ryan McArthur (one of the country’s top upright bass players) on upright bass and Thomas Glendinning on drums and percussion. The band’s songwriting has been compared to and draws influence from bands and artists such as Frank Turner, Flogging Molly, Mumford and Son’s, Against Me, Mischief Brew.
Jon’s solo album, Fortune Favours, is available on all leading digital distribution platforms.
