Hosting a dinner party these days is tricky, what with Banting, lactose intolerance, wheat-free, dairy-free, vegetarians who do eat fish but only sustainably caught, the list goes on. But surely the most difficult is vegan. What is a vegan and what do they eat?
To find out, you can take a visit to the monthly Vegan Goods Market in Plumstead where all is revealed.
Market organiser Sarah Beckett said the idea was to create a hub providing access to vegan food and animal friendly items and to see how easy it is and that it is a kinder lifestyle.
Ms Beckett says being a vegan is a lifestyle with an ethical, plant-based diet, free from all animal products, preservatives and chemicals. Vegans are also mindful of the impact they have on the earth. Where the food comes from, the industry used to produce the food. She says vegans do not support the leather or wool industry because of how it is produced.
The market also creates an opportunity to meet and interact with like-minded people and serves as an educational resource.
On sale are a range of goodies, including tasty food, indulgent sweet treats (cake and ice-cream), interesting clothing, organic health and beauty products, and so much more.
On Saturday April 5, the Easter market held a fund-raiser for the Karoo Donkey Sanctuary. Children of all ages hunted for vegan treats and gifts and then enjoyed a picnic on the grassy area at the back of the market.
The next market celebrates the one year anniversary and will take place on Saturday May 6, from 10am to 2pm, at Khanyisa Waldorf School, 4 Victoria Road, opposite the Plumstead Municipality Building. For details contact Sarah at 084 4233 771.
