Scores of people have been left homeless after a fire destroyed around 1000 homes in Masiphumelele yesterday.
The Fire and Rescue Service crew from Kommetjie Road were first to arrive at the scene just after 4pm. The fire in Masemola Street was being fanned by strong winds.
Additional resources were called in. A chopper, eight firefighting appliances and 40 staff members battled the blaze.
The fire was extinguished at 1am. No injuries were reported.
Today authorities are visiting the area to assess the damage.
The City has appealed to members of the public to please donate essential items such as blankets, baby food, nappies, baby milk and non-perishable food to the organisation Living Hope in Masiphumelele. You can contact them on 082 465 9067.
