Celebrate all things fynbos at the first Fynbos Fair in Muizenberg on Saturday April 1.
The event is a fund-raiser arranged by the Friends of Muizenberg Park (FoMP) to restore the critically endangered fynbos found in Muizenberg Park.
The park falls within the fynbos biome; originally, the natural vegetation would have been a mix of Peninsula sandstone fynbos on the upper reaches (nationally endangered and legally protected) and Peninsula granite fynbos (critically endangered and legally protected) on the lower granite soils.
The City of Cape Town’s Biodiversity Network suggests that this habitat has local conservation significance.
There are still remnants of granite fynbos in the upper reaches of the park, and if properly managed, rare species of fynbos may be rediscovered.
FoMP is working towards restoring this area and, in time, creating an educational “Fynbos Walk” by building a board walk and placing signage to provide information on the natural and cultural heritage in Muizenberg Park.
The Fynbos Fair will take place from 10am until 3pm in Muizenberg Park, on the corner of Main and School roads. Various food and beverages will be on sale, all with a fynbos twist. There will even be virgin fynbos cocktails for sale.
Also participating are a number of ceramicists and artists including Carrie Basson, Shaune Rogatschnig and Zoe Mafham and there will be all sorts of fynbos inspired gifts, body products and homeware, not forgetting actual fynbos plants for your water-wise garden.
There is a kiddie’s area called Funbos with giant protea pictures to colour in, a junior scavenger hunt, fynbos puzzle races, a jumping castle and a senior scavenger hunt for 9-year-olds and up, which entails smartphones and a specially created downloadable app.
And for the rest there is a chill-out area on the day called the Protea Lounge with busker-style musicians arranged by Slow Life.
Entry is free and there is a raffle to raise funds for the FoMP Fynbos Fund with prizes including bottles of fynbos-infused gin, liqueurs, home furnishings and accommodation for a weekend in Muizenberg.
