A Fish Hoek High School pupil has been spending her school holidays teaching girls and women how to change a tyre and a light bulb and other useful, but often overlooked, skills.
Grade 9 pupil Alexandra Weber, 15, teamed up with Tina Thiart, who is involved with the Forward Fund, Women’s Net and Girls Net NGOs.
They ran what they called the Girls Net Power Leadership Programme, at the Forward Fund Academy, at Solaris Business Park, on Kommetjie Road.
There they taught Grade 7 girls and some women from Ocean View, Masiphumelele and far south suburbs sewing skills, how to change a tyre, a wiper blade and a light bulb and how to connect a plug, among other things. The week-long training included fire safety, first aid, team-work, goal-setting, and entrepreneurial know-how.
There was also talk by Child Line and the girls and women learnt how to set up email accounts and navigate basic computer programmes.
Women’sNet and GirlsNet teach girls and women information communication skills.
