The South Peninsula Handcraft Centre is celebrating 52 years of creativity.
According to the organisation’s secretary, Dianne Osborne, the non-profit organisation, was established in June 1972.
In the early 1970s, the Business and Professional Womens’ Association, had a branch in Fish Hoek, led by Sadie Juter, and it held an exhibition of fine needle and crochet work at an art gallery on the beachfront to raise funds to establish a goodwill centre in the old Windsor Hotel.
A few months later, in April 1972, the Handcraft Centre had its inaugural meeting. Ms Juter was nominated as the chairperson and it started with 11 members in the old library hall in Beach Road.
As its membership expanded, meetings were moved to their present venue in the Fish Hoek civic centre
