You no longer need a tank to fight your way into Kalk Bay Harbour’s parking area – it’s been given a much-needed facelift.
At the same time, the City has added paved paths to the rocky shoreline along with benches, street lights, and a space for markets, fairs, and exhibitions.
The parking-lot upgrade was part of the Main Road rehabilitation project.
Transport and urban development Mayco member, Brett Herron, said the asphalt surfacing and demarcated bays should give more access to parking and ease the crush seen in the past, especially during the busy tourist season and weekends, with traffic backing up along Main Road.
Visitors to Kalk Bay can now soak up a sunrise from one of the new benches along the walkways to the rocky shore.
New red-brick stairs lead from the parking lot to the lower section of the harbour and the retaining wall is clad with sandstone excavated during Main Road repairs.
“We presented concepts to residents in the local community who made suggestions and their contributions were taken into account,” said Mr Herron. “I am confident that visitors and the local community will benefit from this upgrade for years to come.”
