The school bell rang 18 times at Janet N’tozini’s final farewell.
Once, for every year of her life.
Tears flowed in a deeply personal tribute to honour the Muizenberg High School pupil who was stabbed to death on Sunday March 3 while defending a disabled boy
in Vrygrond, where she lived, (“Janet’s death not in vain”, Echo March 14).
The memorial was by invite only and was for the family, the school community and friends.
Education MEC Debbie Schäfer also attended the event, held at the school on Wednesday March 13.
Janet was described as somebody who loved to bring light-heartedness and laughter to her friends,
but also, as an individual thinker who stood by her convictions and stood up for what she believed
in.
Janet’s life was transformed by school and soccer, which was her special love. She wore the number 7 shirt with exceptional pride.
Her friends, school friends and teachers all fought back tears of loss while giving voice to the legacy she left.
The audience, dressed in Janet’s favourite colours of pink, black and white, sang songs to her and in closing, said that heaven has a number 7 now.
