Scout leader Jonothan O’Callaghan led the 2nd Fish Hoek Scout Group on an awareness walk from Noordhoek Common through the Fish Hoek Valley to the Fish Hoek Scout Hall on Saturday April 14, collecting plastic trash to fill as many two-litre eco bricks as possible.
“Plastics are one of the most useful inventions of modern times, but their use is endangering our planet.
The challenge will put a small dent in the problem by itself, but we seek to raise awareness for this problem as much as help it directly.
The scouts have taken on this issue, as it is a concern that troubles us deeply, and given our direct involvement with nature, we want to help it us much as possible, “ said Mr O’Callaghan.
Angels Resource Centre sponsored the walk to create awareness of the long-lasting damage single-use plastics do to the environment.
Angels, founded by social anthropologist Lizelle Coombs, established the Fish Hoek office in 2017 to create training and mentoring programmes in the area for entrepreneurs.
Angels is currently sponsoring the making of “Angel-bricks”.
Interested parties and budding entrepreneurs can commit to creating 400 eco bricks and receive seed funding of R2 000 from Angels to start a business using the
bricks.
