For a donation of R1 000 the name of a loved one can be added to Rescue 6, the National Sea Rescue Institute’s new offshore rescue craft.
The vessel completed her maiden voyage from Cape Town to her home station in Gqeberha’s Port of Port Elizabeth on Wednesday September 25, according to NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon.
NSRI CEO Dr Cleeve Robertson said the French-designed vessel was built entirely in South Africa at an estimated cost of R22 million. It could carry six volunteer rescuers in shock-mitigating seats and 23 survivors and was capable of high-speed operation in difficult sea conditions.
Mr Lambinon said the 14.8-metres-long and 4.8-metres-wide craft was built by Two Oceans Marine in Cape Town and was designed for high performance in harsh maritime conditions. It could be deployed as far as 50 nautical miles from land and had an expected lifespan of at least 40 years.
He said the craft, currently referred to as Rescue 6, needed a naming sponsor.
