Inter-house athletics rock

It is being called, “athletic medicine” – the Kleinberg Primary’s annual inter-house athletics event which was held on Thursday March 3 at Ocean View’s sportsfield.

“It has become one of the most attended events on Ocean View’s social calendar,” said teacher, Fuad Jacobs.

He said that more than 1 000 spectators flocked to the meet, many taking the day off from work not only to sup- port their own children but to be part of the party atmos- phere.

Grandparents, extended family members and friends brought gazebos and umbrellas to ward off the sun and settled down for the day.

The event started with a precision march by the athle-tics houses, followed by the national anthem, with the school song being the grand finale.

Mr Jacobs said many community leaders were in attendance and thanked the school for arranging such a well-planned event.

“For many, the timing of the sport meet could not have come at a better time. The whole community, including pupils from Kleinberg Primary who are directly affected by the recent shootings, really needed a break from the violence,” he said.

“Teachers noted that the affected pupils were much more at ease while practi- sing for their individual events.

“Not only was the event lots of fun, but also a time for the community to get back to what they are used to, a peaceful co-existence.

“The whole event serves as an indication to all that there are more positives and good in the community of Ocean View,” he said.
