Lights of hope in Simon’s Town

Jubilee Square was abuzz on Sunday with the annual switching on of the Christmas lights. The event was organised by the Simon’s Town Business Association and all proceeds were donated to the Simon’s Town Museum.

Visitors enjoyed the soothing sounds of the Navy Band and a parade by the fire station, National Sea Rescue Institute, Cape Medical Response and SAPS.

Simon’s Town Business Association chairwoman Steph Mellor said that in 2019 Simon’s Town resident Erick Laing had donated R35 000 towards the lights. He had since died but this year his son had donated a further R10 000 towards the planning of the event.

“We are extremely grateful for their generosity,” she said.

In a time where people had suffered many losses, the event was one of hope, she said.
