The Fish Hoek Philatelic Society will celebrate its 70th anniversary on Tuesday March 5 with an exhibition at the Simon’s Town Country Club.
The exhibition, put together by club secretary Volker Janssen, will be open to the public following the 2pm annual general meeting for members only.
According to Mr Janssen, the club was founded on March 22, 1954 and has grown into a vibrant community of philatelists dedicated to preserving the art and history of postage stamps.
Meetings were first held on the first Wednesday of the month at the Green Parrot Tea Room in Fish Hoek on the corner of Recreation and Main roads as well as The Lanark Hotel and the old library hall, both on Beach Road, and the library hall at Fish Hoek civic centre.
Meetings are now held at 2pm on the first Tuesday of the month in the MOTH Hall.
“Members have brought much honour to the society by way of national and international awards, medals, cups, citations, and being jurymen for exhibitions. Visitors are always welcome at meetings, which offer a variety of philatelic material to view,” Mr Janssen said.
Competitions and mini-auctions are held at the end of each meeting, and since its inception, the society has supported National Stamp Day in October, National Stamp Collecting Month, each year, usually with an open meeting where the public can view exhibits and buy stamps.
