More than 100 shacks that 235 people called home were destroyed by a fire in Masiphumelele.
Rescue services were alerted to the blaze at 1.23am on Saturday January 29, said City Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Jermaine Carelse.
More than 50 firefighters were dispatched to the scene where they found homes ablaze in Masemola Street.
The fire was extinguished by 7.24am with no injuries reported, said Mr Carelse. The cause is undetermined.
Mayoral committee member for human settlements Malusi Booi said victims had been identified and the municipality was clearing the site of debris.
Living Hope and Gift of the Givers have aided the victims.
Gift of the Givers project manager Ali Sablay said they had given warm meals, bottled water, and baby-care packs, and food hampers, blankets, school uniforms and other necessities would follow.
