ALAS Academy in Fish Hoek will present its latest show, Disaster!, a musical comedy set in the 1970s, at the Masque Theatre in Muizenberg next month
Created by by Seth Rudetsky and co-written with Jack Plotnick, Disaster!, is set at the grand opening of a floating casino and nightclub that soon faces a series of disasters similar to those in 1970s disaster films such as The Towering Inferno, Earthquake, and The Poseidon Adventure.
“The story starts off lively, but quickly turns chaotic as unexpected disasters threaten to sink the ship. The cast must come together to survive,” says Amy Hart, director and owner of ALAS Academy.
“Expect an evening of laughs, song, foot-tapping disco drama, and feel-good chaos,” says Ms Hart.
Jada Carelse, 16, plays Levora Verona, and this is her first performance with the academy since she joined this year.
“The show is so much fun. I’m excited for everyone to see how our hard work and passion have created something really special. It’s going to be a blast,” she says.
The cast includes Toby Flood, Tygo Wijsenbeek, Matthew Leck, Erin Hoek, Liam Strydom, Amari van Nieuwenhuizen, Twyla van Reenen, Taylor Louw, Amy Richards, Erin Haylle-Dick, Hannah Esterhuizen, Joe Awerbuck, Peter Campbell-Watts, Jada Carelse, Aurora van Til, Arun Bothma, Kate Elario, Ayanda Jewison, Holly Fawkes, Ella Fawkes, Harry Hooper, Ruby Merifield, Zahraa Baxter, Kian Mortlock, Jordynn van der Poll, Megan Stiles, Holly Vermaak and Rowen Hassim.
The backstage team includes Leyya Haarhoff, Anna-Lear Pinkney, Kiara Roberts, Haley Coetzee and Scott Gill.
Choreography is by Meagan Miller and costumes are designed by Jann Vermaak, Linda Moss, Rozlyn van Reenen and Cassandra van Til.
Set design is by Geoff Hart and Greg van Til with lighting managed by Gabriel Goldstein from the Masque Theatre and sound design by Geoff Hart.
Performances are on Friday August 2, at 7pm, and Saturday August 3, at 2pm and 7pm.
