The children’s section at Ocean View library has a fresh new look with colourful murals and a redesigned layout.
“The previous design was outdated and not engaging for children,” said librarian Marlene Davids, who led the project.
“We wanted to create a space that was visually appealing and easy to navigate for both the kids and their parents.”
The revamp was funded by the Friends of Ocean View Library.
Ocean View artist Lee Booysen started working on the project last month helped by Shabeer Manuel.
“I was already involved in teaching the kids visual arts at the library, so when Ms Davids asked me if I could do mural art, it was a great opportunity to contribute further,” Mr Booysen said.
The murals feature characters inspired by Dr Seuss, Disney, and other children’s favourites.
“The process of painting the murals while the library was open allowed the children to see the art come to life,” Mr Booysen said.
The murals also depict Libee, the City’s libraries mascot, which Ms Davids originally created.
“It was important for us to feature Libee in the display as it holds special meaning,” she said.
She added: “Children find the new design visually appealing because it includes characters they can relate to. Parents have also appreciated the improved layout, especially the new learning station, where themed books… are now easier to browse.”
