A two-year-old child was among nine people who were hurt in a head-on collision on Main Road in Muizenberg. The accident happened shortly after 4am on Saturday October 29.
Paramedics from ER24 and other services arrived on the scene, where one of the vehicles lay mangled on the side of the road.
ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said: “It is understood that seven people, including the child, were in the vehicle which overturned several times. The child – as well as some of the adults – were ejected from the vehicle during the collision.”
He said that three people were in a critical condition, while the rest were in a serious condition with multiple injuries. Paramedics found two adults in the second vehicle with serious injuries.
Both had to be extricated by Metro Rescue and fire services on scene, using hydraulic rescue equipment.
The injured were transported to Victoria and Groote Schuur hospitals. They were transported by ER24, Metro EMS and Cape Medical Response. Police were at the scene and were expected to conduct an investigation into the exact cause of the accident.
