The Ocean View Organic Farmers Co-operative is re-opening its Hoenderhok Café.
The sit-down restaurant will operate as Caper Kitchen at the Hoenderhok, from Wednesdays to Saturdays, from 9.30am to 3.30pm. It will also be available for private functions.
The chairwoman of the Ocean View Organic Farmers Co-operative, Sophia Grodes, said Hoenderhok Café first opened on Mandela Day, July 18, last year, but it had to close due to the second Covid-19 wave.
The restaurant’s revival is the result of a collaboration between the co-operative and Caper Kitchen, a former coffee shop that now offers home-cooked meals online. It will run the restaurant but won’t own the premises.
Ms Grodes says visitors can expect fabulous views, fresh food, and great service at the café, which is set in the heart of the farm next to the Ocean View Secondary School in Hydra Avenue, Ocean View.
The Ocean View Organic Farmers Co-operative is an emerging social enterprise owned by five women known locally as the “Kos Gangsters” (Food gangsters)
The women were part of Justin Bonello’s Neighbourhood Farm initiative in 2018, where market gardens were set up with funding from the Western Cape Department of Agriculture. In 2019, the organisation opened an agri-training hub in Ocean View situated on the grounds of the Ocean View Secondary School, and on completion of the training in January 2020, the farm was handed to the qualifying interns to take forward as agri-entrepreneurs.
Caper Kitchen’s owner and chef, Janine le Roux, said she was excited about the collaboration and was looking forward to welcoming visitors.
Ms Grodes said: “We focus on collaborations in all aspects of our farming business, as we are here to support the community and that also means offering people fabulous, farm-fresh food.”
