On Saturday July 15 the Ocean View community participated in a follow-up meeting to review the draft Community Action Plan (CAP) document, which was workshopped by volunteers from the community following a community participatory meeting last month.
Ocean View is one of eight communities in the province for which mayor Patricia de Lille has set money aside for urban renewal as part of the Mayoral Regeneration Programme.
The purpose of the meeting, held at Ocean View Senior Secondary, was to present the draft CAP and to elicit additional volunteers.
There was a total of 24 supporting NGOs, youth groups, school student leaders from Ocean View Senior Secondary and SAPS, which amounted to 80 participants from within the community and members from neighbouring communities. This has been the biggest group in attendance so far.
A volunteer task team worked hard to mobilise residents by handing out posters and flyers in the community, at the shopping mall and posted in taxis.
A great sense of excitement and enthusiasm filled the room and
community participation was engaging and meaningful. New vision and fresh ideas were generated and will be added to the draft CAP.
This document will be handed to Ms De Lille through her officials who attended as observers.
The existing task team that brought the process so far was mandated to take the process further and three additional members were elected.
Special thanks is extended to all community members, stakeholder NGOs, Mayoral Urban Regeneration Programme officials, those who sponsored refreshments, equipment and the venue.
This was a positive and uplifting community effort to address the challenges faced by the people of Ocean View on a daily basis.
