This is one of the baboons which was drifting through Simon’s Town on Monday February 27, in search of food. Mothers carrying babies, very young ones flitting about close to the adults, and at least one large male baboon made its way into the town’s outskirts raiding bins and eating vegetation from the roadsides. By mid-morning they were gathered outside the Simon’s Town Methodist Church, sunning themselves. Only one possibly dangerous incident occurred when a man charged two baboons, who fled the bin and ran directly into oncoming traffic. Baboons are wild animals and animal authorities repeatedly remind locals and visitors that they should not be challenged. Oncoming cars narrowly missed the animals.
