Police officers inspect a car that was hit by a police van carrying six prisoners to Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court.

Two police officers and six prisoners were hospitalised after a police van rolled and hit two cars in Fish Hoek Main Road on Monday morning.

The van was taking prisoners from Ocean View police station to Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court at the time of the crash, at 8.30am, according to Fish Hoek police spokesman Warrant Officer Peter Middelton.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

One of the cars damaged in the crash.

Cape Medical Response (CMR) spokesman Darren Zimmerman said no serious injuries were sustained and six prisoners were taken to False Bay Hospital under police guard while the two police officers were taken to Melomed Hospital.

Warrant Officer Middelton said three of the prisoners were back in police custody while the other three would remain in hospital for further observation. The drivers of the two cars, he said, were traumatised but had not suffered any serious injuries.

Investigating officer Detective Warrant Officer Joe Scheepers said anyone who had witnessed the accident should call him at 021 784 2714.
