The art of home-made craft is thriving in the warmth of the Marina da Gama Recreation Club.
Once a month the craft market – which has moved indoors for winter – has on offer the fruits of many hours of labour, as talented Marina residents reveal their latest works.
The Wesley home is a prime example. Derek Wesley invests many of his retirement hours crafting wooden pens on his lathe from a variety of woods, such as African rosewood, imbuia, black wenge and wild olive.
He also creates a host of other wooden items, while his wife, Laraine, says her knitted stock is almost depleted it has been selling so well. On her table are jerseys, caps, baby booties, children’s bed socks and more, and there is a new creation in its infancy on her knitting needles.
Art, food, hand-made cement pots with a variety of cactus gardens in them, soaps, plants and children’s mobiles, plus a wide assortment of bags, charming teddies and jewellery are among the treasures.
