The hit song Jerusalema by South African artist Master KG
and its resultant dance challenge have taken the world by
storm, and Kommetjie rose to the challenge on Saturday September 19.
Carissa Meiring, founder of Deep South Vibes, a student
entertainment and promotional hub, described the
gathering she organised on Kommetjie’s Long Beach as a
grand success, made possible by all those who had taken
part. “I don’t think we realised just how much we needed
this #JerusalemaChallenge until we did it,” she said. “It had
brought joy and life back to the many reeling from anxiety,
depression, loss of livelihood, and loved ones, she said.
“As we danced, we were guided to release our pain, our loss,
and rejoice as we move to level 1 lockdown and out of this
very dark period.” South Africans always seemed to resonate
with dance, as it saw no colour, gender or politics, she said.
Many of the participants had been in tears by the time they
had ended with the national anthem, she said.
“No matter what, we can get through anything if we stand as
one. Thank you to everyone who made this such a success.”
