An estimated 500 000 rapes take place in the country every year.
Further alarming statistics report that over 40 percent of South African women will be raped in their lifetime and that only one in nine rapes are reported.
Although 3.5 percent of men have been forced to have sex with other men, lots of sexual violence is against women and minors in particular.
According to South Africa’s Tears Foundation, 50 percent of South Africa’s children will be abused before the age of 18.
It is unbelievable that often child abusers are relatives of the victims and at times their fathers or care providers.
A significant contributing factor for the escalation in child abuse is the widespread myth that having sex with a virgin will cure a man of Aids. To restore human dignity, values, and morals, action needs to be taken to end this inhumane act.
