The Fish Hoek Tennis Club’s morning women’s tennis league held a charity breakfast in aid of a Noordhoek shelter for abused and neglected horses.
The fund-raiser was held at the Clovelly Country Club last month.
The league’s interim chairperson, Dot Bransby, described the shelter as a “very worthy recipient”.
Gillian McCulloch and her daughter, Stephanie, started the non-profit shelter in 2012. The horses are used in healing programmes helping children and young adults at risk as well as victims of physical or emotional trauma.
“The costs of running a horse-rescue haven are huge and constant, and Tom Ro Haven relies solely on donations and help from volunteers. Initiatives like this one are vitally important for the future of the horses and the betterment of young, vulnerable lives,“ said Ms Bransby.
Several Fish Hoek Tennis Club members visited the shelter on Wednesday June 12 to hand over a cheque for R20 000.
Stephanie accepted the donation and showed the women around the haven.
Gillian said: “We just don’t have any words for their generosity and kindness. This money will go towards roughage, which is sorely needed and a regular expense, and the rest will go to supplements and other feed for the horses. We are deeply thankful for their kindness.”
