The City of Cape Town’s recreation and parks department is planning to beef up security at the Ocean View Sports Complex, where vandals have done more than R120 000 damage in three years.
A three-year and R720 000 project upgraded the facility and included repairs to windows and spray-park equipment. But vandals struck just six weeks after the work was finished.
Area south Mayco member Eddie Andrews said that over the past three years vandals had broken windows; damaged burglar bars; stolen taps, light fixtures, cables, recreational equipment; and more.
“This excludes the most recent vandalism, as the damage has not yet been calculated in this instance,” he said.
Stone bars would now be fitted to the windows, among other measures to improve security, but even that was no guarantee against further and vandalism, he said.
“The community needs to take responsibility for community facilities and value them as a resource. It is only when communities do this that facilities are valued and looked after,” he said.
Blob: Vandalism can be reported to the City’s emergency 107 line. Dial 107 from a Telkom line or 021 480 7700 from a cellphone.
