Siphesande Tyobeka, of St James Roman Catholic Primary, has won a prize trip to Kenya. Earlier in the year, the school enrolled a small group of Grade 6s and 7s in the Web Rangers programme, teaching digital literacy and safety. Those pupils, in turn, trained the rest of the school. As part of the course, pupils worked in teams and competed against other schools. The St James team made a video, for a competition, about digital literacy and some of the risks of using social media. That video won each pupil a new smartphone. In an essay competition that followed, Siphesande writing on the topic “How to make South Africa a better place”, won top prize – an all-expenses-paid trip to Kenya, where she will attend the 2019 Web Rangers Africa Summit in Nairobi this month. Principal Lynette Saunders said the school was very proud of Siphesande and the Web Rangers team guided by staff member Kelly Francis. Â
