Two people were critically injured at the Uxbridge level crossing near Lakeside on Tuesday afternoon, May 23, when their car was involved in a collision with a train, at 1.35pm
ER24 paramedics, along with the Metro and fire services, arrived on the scene and found the car on the tracks next to the train.
When investigating, paramedics discovered a man and woman lying trapped inside their car. Both patients were found to be in a serious condition.
Metro and fire services had to use specialised equipment to free both passengers from the vehicle.
Paramedics then treated them with advanced life support interventions.
Metro services transported the patients to Victoria Hospital for further treatment.
Nobody aboard the train sustained any injuries.
Russel Meiring, spokesperson for ER24, said the cause of the collision is not yet known, but authorities had been on the scene to investigate.
Spokesperson for Metrorail, Riana Scott, said: “The train driver is shocked but unhurt. We have no reports of commuter injuries.”
Ms Scott said on Tuesday the train and vehicle were damaged.
“Commuters on board the stricken train were assisted to disembark from the train involved in the incident. Both railway lines were closed for the duration of the incident investigation.”
She said revised transport arrangements, until the police’s on-site investigation was concluded and the line was cleared for operation, included a limited bus service between Retreat and Fish Hoek and train service between Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town.
She said on the day that delays of 60 minutes had been anticipated.
