Wetland wonder

Friends of Silvermine Nature Area (FOSNA) volunteers organised a wetlands exploration programme for 13 pupils from Kuils River’s Athlone School for the Blind. This was for a workshop hosted by the Origami For Africa club on Saturday November 5. The pupils, whose visual impairment ranged from substantial to total, participated in activities using smell, taste, touch, sound, and sight. A selection of local and indigenous fynbos plants with different scents and textures was shared among the pupils. They were encouraged to experience and discuss why the plants are so variable and what that means in wetland habitats. Kyoko Kimura from Origami for Africa is pictured here with the pupils in the lower Silvermine wetlands.
