World Marine Aids to Navigation Day

Slangkoppunt Lighthouse will open for free for two days.

More than 350 locals braved the cold weather to celebrate the inaugural World Marine Aids to Navigation Day on Monday July 1 and Tuesday July 2 at the Slangkoppunt Lighthouse in Kommetjie. The occasion also commemorated the centenary of the lighthouse, which is the tallest cast-iron tower on the South African coast. It was commissioned on March 4 1919 and is one of 45 active lighthouses, (“Lighting up the way for 100 years,” Echo, June 28).
