More than 350 locals braved the cold weather to celebrate the inaugural World Marine Aids to Navigation Day on Monday July 1 and Tuesday July 2 at the Slangkoppunt Lighthouse in Kommetjie. The occasion also commemorated the centenary of the lighthouse, which is the tallest cast-iron tower on the South African coast. It was commissioned on March 4 1919 and is one of 45 active lighthouses, (“Lighting up the way for 100 years,” Echo, June 28).
