The third round of the Western Cape BMX championships was nothing short of spectacular when it was hosted at the newly-built track at Zone 7 at the weekend.
Chairman of the Zone 7 BMX club, Thomas Hendry was satisfied with what they hope will be the first of many competitions at the new track.
Top BMX rider and 2021 BMX national champion, Wanga Moshani, was in a dominant mood in the Super class category, winning all three of his races and taking first place overall.
The real battle in the category was for second place with Lakhanya Skhobongwane edging out Mihlali Matiso who had to settle for third.
Wanda Qama and Luthando James rounded up the top five in arguably the most exhilarating race of the day.
Jannie Munnik was in top form in the hotly contested Open wheeler category, taking first overall with Luca Hewitson coming second. Jodie Mans made a great comeback after not finishing in the first race to take third overall.
The Cruiser category was one of the most contested races of the day and there was no clear favourite as any of the top three riders had what it took to take the honours.
The battle for first spot was between brothers Darryn and Bradley Stow and George Roth. In the end it was Darryn who held his nerve to take first place with his brother, Bradley settling for third with Roth in between them in second place.
All six riders who participated in the Cruiser category managed to finish all the races.
Mihle Matiniso, Mivuyo Mndini and Yandisa Yolwa finished in that order in the 14 to 15 expert boys.
Connor Harman and Cruz Hendry gave locals a great battle in their 8 to 9 expert boys on their home turf on a track they also use for their practice sessions.
The day was not only made for the competitors only as the championships were open to a lot of riders from the seven and under age groups.
The BMX club says the plan is to give the riders an opportunity to showcase their skills from an early stage.
The club says the bigger plan is to work to return Cape Town back to its former glory of BMX competition, which was huge back in the 80s and 90s.
Teams that took part in the weekend festivities were Overberg, Songo, Kraaifontein, Velokhaya and Zone 7.
